Where I’ll Be at Capclave
Capclave is a small local convention that concentrates mostly on short fiction, held every October in Rockville, Maryland. This year, it’s happening on October 18 – 20. I’ve gone to Capclave since 2013, but this is the first time I’m on programming.
The following are the panels and events I’ll be a part of:
Friday, 5 PM
Does Size Matter? – Washington: (with Scott H. Andrews, Craig L. Gidney, Edward M. Lerner, Suzanne Palmer); What are the strengths and weaknesses of short stories, novelettes, novellas, and novels? How are they different in structure? Why write one over the other? As a writer do you plan to write to a length or let a story find its length? How (and when) does an author know if an idea is a short story idea or a novel idea? Do you edit a story down to a preferred length?
Friday, 7 PM
Author reading- Wilson: I’m pretty sure I’ll be reading part of, “As the Shore to the Tides, So Blood Calls to Blood” (forthcoming in Beneath Ceaseless Skies) and closing with a live reading of “This Is Not My Adventure.”
Saturday, 12-1 PM
Points of View – Eisenhower: (with Sarah Avery, Keith DeCandido, Barbara Krasnoff, Fran Wilde); There are single and multiple point of view stories. The switch between characters can be jarring or smooth. How do authors use point of view in their writing? How can POV help the reader keep track of multiple characters? Which stories work best single versus multiple POVs?
Saturday, 5-6 PM
Political Climate in SF – Truman: (with Brenda Clough, Wendy S. Delmater, Inge Heyer, Larry Hodges); How does the political climate influence fiction? What effects are fiction having on politics? What is there relationship? How do you market SF in a climate where many are skeptical about science?
Saturday, 7-8 PM
Writing Non-Humans – Truman: (LH Moor, Sunny Moraine, Jamie Todd Rubin, A.C. Wise); Note: there’s no specific description for this panel, but I’m assuming it’s a discussion on how to write AI, robots, alien species and other such persons.
Sunday, `12-1 PM
Dealing With Rejection – Eisenhower: (Neil Clarke, Leah Cypess, Dina Leacock, Ian Randal Strock); What do you do when the story you think will change SF forever keeps on being rejected? There are multiple ways to search out new markets and receive feedback. Is it a matching issue, is it not good, how do you find out?
Hope to see you there!
